Common Types of Modeling Contracts
Common Types of Modeling ContractsCommon Types of Modeling ContractsModelingcontracts arent one-size-fits-all. Every agency has a unique way of doing things, and each one will have its own rules, regulations, and guidelines. The more contracts you sign, the more youll get to know their similarities and differences, but until you reach that point youre bound to feel a bit lost. It might help to know that there are generally four primary schrifts of modeling contracts in the industry mother agency contracts, nonexclusive contracts, exclusive contracts, and one-time-only contracts. Mother Agency Contracts A mother agency (or mother agent) is the one you first begin working with. Theyre the agency that helps you learn the industry and build your portfolio, and that gives you the guidance you need to succeed as a model. Therefore, a mother agency contract will most likely be the first one youll ever sign. Mother agencies are often smaller, local modeling agencies. To help their models book more lucrative and book important jobs, the mother agency will often promote its models to other agencies in larger markets, such as New York, Paris, Milan, and Tokyo. Being in a larger market means youll have the chance to book modeling jobs with major publications like Vogue, Elle, and W, and work with major clients like Gucci, Prada, and Abercrombie Fitch. Your mother agency will receive a commission, generally between 5 percent to 10 percent, from what the larger agency deducts. Since the mother agency is getting a percentage of what the larger agency is deducting anyway, it will not cost you more to have both a mother agency and larger agency representing you. Having said that, there are some markets, particularly in Asia, in which the mother agency commission is taken on top of the larger agency commission. With mother agency contracts, its important to note how long the contract is binding. Some contracts only last a year or two, but others can last the duration of you r entire career. Nonexclusive Contracts A nonexclusive contract gives models the power to sign with as many agencies as they want and possibly find their own non-agency side jobs. This is more common for commercial models than the high fashion or editorial models. You might not get as many opportunities or as much guidance with an nonexclusive agency as you would with an exclusive one, but this type of contract does offer models a lot of freedom. If the modeling agency finds you work then they get paid a commission. And if you find work on your own, you owe them nothing. Exclusive Contracts When you sign an exclusive contract with a modeling agency, you can only be represented by that agency for the duration of the contract. Sometimes there are exceptions- the term exclusive may be limited by time, geography, or type of modeling- but if youre working with a top agency like Ford or Wilhelmina Models, then it means you cant sign with anyone else without their permission. This type of contract gives a lot of power to the modeling agency, so if youre considering signing an exclusive contract its even more important to make sure youre working with a reputable modeling agency that has your best interests at heart. One-Time-Only Contracts This type of contract is only good for a single booking. As soon as the project is complete, the contract ends. Be sure that all the details- such as the amount youll be paid, how your photos are going to be used, how long theyll be used, and restrictions for working with competing companies- are clearly explained in the contract. Its always advisable to work with an agency that can help you with this sort of contract rather than signing one on your own.

3 Ways to Kick off Your New Job the Right Way
3 Ways to Kick off Your New Job the Right Way3 Ways to Kick off Your New Job the Right WayStarting a new job is tough, no matter how you slice it. For me, the hardest part welches figuring out how to implant myself, feel comfortable, and fit into my new culture- while (of course) still trying to impress everyone along the way.Over the years, I tried many different tactics, and eventually came up with a few simple guidelines that helped me warm up to a new environment with ease and grace.1. Pretend Youre Visiting a Foreign CountryOne of the biggest mistakes Ive made in the past has been to try to immediately immerse myself into my new culture, and begin mimicking the attitudes and behaviors around me so I could more easily fit in. This can be dangerous in many ways, not the least of which being that you just might lose a bit of yourself in the process. So to help fight this urge, while making sure Im still coming across as friendly, eager, and curious, I just pretend like Im visiting s omeplace completely new. Remember the last time you visited someplace completely foreign? You knew when you arrived that things would be different, and you were prepared to see things you may not have seen before- whether it welches unusual foods or greeting customs that were wholly unfamiliar. You were probably curious and even surprised at what you saw, but you reacted with respect and attentiveness- after all, you were a visitor in someone elses territory. This can be extremely helpful when getting acquainted with a new work environment. If you can withhold judgment about how you expect things to be (from the way meetings are run to the vendors you work with) and go in knowing things probably wont operate the way youre accustomed to, youre already off to a great start. Believe me, the phrase this is how we did it at my last job gets old after exactly one time.2. Dont Be a Know-it-AllIf youre anything like me, your first instinct when starting a new job is to try to find as many wa ys to prove to your new boss how capable you are. And this is fine- as long as you do more showing and less telling. As a former manager myself, one of my biggest pet peeves was hiring a new employee only to find he or she already knew everything, and didnt want or need my input. The truth is, if you lack humility and respect for those that are already there, you will have a much harder time convincing them of your skills, and you wont come across as a team player. On the other hand, when Ive resisted the urge to try to impress, and instead sat back and observed my environment, the results have been powerful. By really trying to understand what we were working to accomplish as a firm or a team, and by showing my interest through being attentive, asking questions, and taking a ridiculous amount of notes, I found that I was invited to more meetings, asked my opinion more often, promoted, and yes, even invited to join happy hour with the team after work.3. Dont Be a Chatty CathyI dont kn ow about you, but when Im nervous, I tend to ramble- but thats not exactly the best way to convince your new colleagues youll be a great new member of the team. And unfortunately, nervous rambling isnt the only way to talk your way out of teams confidence- being overly social and talkative isnt a good idea either.Several years ago, one of my managers had hired someone new. Everyone on the team interviewed her, thought she was great, and was excited to add her to the group. That is, until she started- and never seemed to stop- talking. Although Im sure she was only trying to be friendly and get to know her new colleagues, her constant attempts to socialize were awkward, not to mention a disruption to the daily workflow. And pretty quickly, we were all convinced she was more interested in everyones lunch plans than actually getting the job done.Nobody likes to be forced to cut someone off mid-conversation- especially when the boss is watching. So dont make them do it. Do yourself (and your new colleagues) a favor, and keep the socializing to a respectful, professional level.Starting a new job- or a new position- is both exciting and intimidating. But, keep these tips in mind as you get your bearings, and youll find much smoother waters ahead. Step back, take it all in, and dont forget- take your notebook everywhere.Photo of woman working courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Ask Your Boss for Regular Check-ins - The Muse
How to Ask Your Boss for Regular Check-ins - The MuseHow to Ask Your Boss for Regular Check-insSo, youre feeling really disconnected from your boss. You like them, but you never seem to be on the same page. Theyre always assigning you new projects but never giving you feedback, or theyre in so many meetings that you rarely see them. This is why having regular one-on-ones with your boss is so important- it helps you address concerns in the moment, get your questions answered, and build a rapport with your boss that makes your working relationship more cohesive, productive, and honest.Of course, this isnt always the case at some companies. Maybe its elend their policy, or your manager oversees so many people it would be hard for them to meet with everyone. That said, it never hurts to ask So, what exactly can you say to convince them to set aside some time for you? Your email could look something like thisHi Managers Name,I really appreciated meeting with you about discussion you met abo ut recently. It welches incredibly helpful in what you got out of the meeting. As a result, I was wondering if we could schedule regular check-ins together? Even if its just for 10-15 minutes a week, Id love to be able to bounce ideas off you and keep you updated on what Im working on, as well as give you an opportunity to give me any constructive feedback you might have on my work.Im happy to work around your schedule, as well as make it a biweekly or monthly meeting instead. Please let me know if this might be possible and what works best for you. Thank youYour Name Or, you can bring it up when you have some time alone togetherIve noticed that when we meet together in person to discuss topic Im more confident in my approach. So, I was wondering if you might consider having regular one-on-ones together? I imagine we wont have urgent stuff to talk about every week, but Id love to have some time for just us two to go over what you expect of me and how I can better work with you.As you might notice, the key is to emphasize why its beneficial for them- because itll help you be a better employee to manage, and help them streamline the work they give you. Along those same lines, its just as important to give them options and say youre open to adjusting the schedule and agenda once you both get into the swing of things. Maybe a weekly meeting feels excessive and you run out of things to talk about, or maybe you agree to send status updates in advance so the time can be spent discussing bigger topics.Regardless of what you decide upon, know that setting up this meeting is truly managing up 101. You not only make your life easier, but by being so proactive you make yourself look pretty damn good in your managers eyes.

How to Have the Career Commitment Talk With Your Boss
How to Have the Career Commitment Talk With Your BossHow to Have the Career Commitment Talk With Your BossConsider three of my clients Nathan is the community manager for an up-and-coming brands online presence, Emily develops apps for a popular mobile platform, and Megan works for a large regional manufacturer thats been run by the saatkorn family for generations. And they all have the same problem. Nathan, Emily, and Megan are all great at what they do, but dont have a clear path for getting promoted to bigger and better things. Many positions in the tech, startup, social media, and small business ecosystems defy the traditional rules of moving up the ladder. Just think Whats the next step after developing those apps or managing those online communities? How do you move up in a family-owned business? In many cases, there simply isnt a defined logical next step. Its a challenge many employees face today. Research shows that less than 50% of employees see viable advancement opportuni ties with their current employers. On top of that, only about a third of managers effectively discuss career development during the performance management process. The bottom line? If you want a viable future at your company, youd better get ready to take the situation into your own hands. That means sitting down with your manager to have the big where is this relationship going? conversation. And when you do, here are a few tips to keep in mind. Take OwnershipIts your career. Theres no one mora invested in your future than you. Waiting for your manager to enlighten you with his or her version of your ideal next step is not a strategy.Instead, own up to the fact that neither your organization nor your manager is in charge of your next step. You are. PrepareThink about where you perform well and how that can position yourself to be successful in your next role. Document your key accomplishments and reflect on the specific results youve achieved for the organization.Once youve collect ed your supporting materials, ask for a meeting with your manager to discuss your future. Treat it like a strategic business meeting- because it isConnect With Your ManagerBegin the meeting by looking at the situation through the lens of your manager. Get a sense for how invested he or she is in helping you. Start with your purpose Jocelyn, Id like to talk about what the next step in my career looks like. Id really like it to be with this organization, but the next steps here arent completely clear to me.Review your accomplishments and reiterate your enthusiasm about working there Ive been here two years and Ive proven my ability to grow community traffic. Its been a tremendous growth experience for me- and for the company. Ive increased engagement by 65% and drove 20% mora unique visitors to our website. Ive met or exceeded my key performance indicators in each of these areas while developing strong relationships with our internal and external stakeholders. What happens next will g ive you an idea of how aligned your boss is with your performance. Listen for her feedback if shes supportive, its likely shell advocate for you. Describe Your Personal VisionShare with your manager where you see yourself in one, three, or five years. Even without specifics like job titles, have a general sense for where youre headed. Do you want to manage people? Work with higher-profile clients?Consider what skills youd like to develop, what experiences youd like to have, and what knowledge youd like to acquire. Share how these things can help the organization solve its business problems. Ask for What You WantYour boss may know you do a great job, but her plate is probably completely full with her own obligations. If youre interested in a promotion or new assignment, ask You could, for example, say, Jocelyn, based on the information weve discussed, what ideas do you have about what my next step here could be?This lets her know you want to move- preferably within the organization- but intimates that it may have to be elsewhere if necessary. If shes all over it, spilling with creative ideas to circumvent a ladder-less system, great If shes at a complete loss for what to tell you or how to direct you, youve got your work cut out for you. Develop Your Own StrategyIf you want to stay with the company, but your boss is rudderless in the idea pond, try researching other departments that could use your skill set and experience. Check in with contacts you have elsewhere in the organization, dig into pain points you hear them mention, and connect to people who need your help. Look at whats changing in the business and see how you can fit in. For example, is there a merger or divestiture on the horizon? Perhaps you can develop an app to usher new employees through the merger process, to help them adapt to new processes and procedures. Or, you might propose a community platform solely for employees- or customers- from the newly acquired organization. Get Your Managers S ponsorship and SupportEven if your boss doesnt open every door, you can reasonably expect that (assuming youre a good performer) she will sponsor your move within the organization. After all, having your shining talent on her team is a gold star for her. Promoting you strengthens her reputation as a perceptive talent manager.Show her what youve uncovered in your research. Identify three to five good next step possibilities and mutually agree on the best path. Then, ask that she commit to making the necessary introductions and recommendations. Reiterate that you want to stay with the organization- thats your first choice. If, however, you cant figure out how to make that happen or if shes unwilling to help open the doors to make that happen, let her know youll be open to looking at opportunities outside the company. Once youve delivered the performance, presented your case, and made your ask, its up to your manager to decide if and how she will help your career movement. And if she i snt willing to sponsor or advocate for you, your move up will most definitely mean a move out. Whether you move into the next big thing where you are or head out to a new organizational frontier, youll be better having gone through this process. Asking for what you deserve is a career skill you need- and one that will continue to benefit you well into the future.Photo of ring courtesy of Shutterstock.

Take the time to write a cover letter that hiring managers will want to read and that makes them confident you are someoneworth in vestigating further. Here are some tips to make a great impression with a cover letter1. Before you begin writing your cover letter, make sure you understand what the company does, the company culture, and the key characteristics of the job you are applying for.2. Dont repeat your resume.Use your cover letter to clarify your resume, but dont repeat it. ASME Issues Statement Supporting U.S. National Strategy for Ad...
ASME Issues Statement Supporting U.S. National Strategy for Ad... ASME Issues Statement Supporting U.S. National Strategy for Ad... ASME Issues Statement Supporting U.S. National Strategy for Advanced ManufacturingASME recently issued a position statement on behalf of 27 companies, associations and universities urging the United States to develop a National Strategy for Advanced Manufacturing with a long-range outlook for increased coordination and sustained support for Federal programs and activities, which would ensure continued growth and innovation within the U.S. manufacturing sector. The position statement, which ASME President Charla K. Wise sent to Ted Wackler, Deputy Chief of Staff in the White Houses Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) on March 7, was written in response to a Request for Information (RFI) issued by the OSTP seeking input from the public regarding the coordination and improvement of Federal programs and activities that foster manufacturing competitiveness , including advanced manufacturing RD that will provide new job opportunities, spur the economy in multiple industries, strengthen national security, and improve healthcare. The statement included a number of suggestions for short- and long-term objectives for ensuring the United States success in advanced manufacturing. In the near-term, the Federal government must show it has an unwavering commitment to the advanced manufacturing sector so that industry and other stakeholders can invest without fear that the Federal government will eliminate or pull back from programs it has invested in, Wise wrote. Industry needs the assurance that the Federal government is its partner, together working on pre-competitive, pre-market solutions to national manufacturing concerns. In order for the Federal government to successfully act as a neutral convener, which is necessary to accelerate advanced manufacturing breakthroughs, there needs to be support for longer-range research targeting 10-15 years out, and there is a need to ensure that this longer-range research is being funneled into medium- to short-range research and development so that we can make use of and leverage this work, Wise said. In supporting a thriving manufacturing innovation pipeline, the United States will be able to innovate at a pace competitive with other nations, ensuring the next breakthrough manufacturing technologies are invented and commercialized here in America. In addition to the initial funding of research, the Federal government must play an ongoing role as a neutral convener and accelerator of technology by offering sustained funding for important manufacturing programs and commit to scaling these programs to a level that will ensure the United States sustained leadership in advanced manufacturing. It takes many years, if not decades, for research to mature into viable commercialized technologies. The advanced manufacturing innovations of tomorrow are entirely dependent on todays research, and research is also entirely dependent upon the ability to budget for the long term, Wise wrote. The government support of public-private partnerships, which can speed the development and commercialization of technical innovations, would also be a key component of a successful National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing. If the government does not fully commit to its role as a neutral convener through existing and new public-private partnerships, multiple players in the same industry will have no incentive to work together on pre-competitive research and development, stunting the growth of the U.S. advanced manufacturing sector and compromising ur role as the world leader in innovative technologies, according to the statement.Another important element of an effective National Strategic Plan would be the appointment of a chief manufacturing officer to ensure that the plan was properly implemented. A chief manufacturing officer would be responsible for coordinating manufacturing-r elated policies and activities across agencies to eliminate any duplicative efforts and streamline processes to make sure all Federal efforts are as efficient as possible in achieving their mission of increasing manufacturing competitiveness, creating new jobs, growing the economy across multiple industrial sectors, strengthening national security, and improving healthcare, Wise wrote. To read the entire RFI Response National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing (ID PS-18-4), visit the ASME Positions Statements page on ASME.org.
